Are you looking for some words that end with X for kindergarten? Grab this printable word list to help you teach your kindergarten students these new words and sounds the easy way!
Did you know the letter X is one of the least used letters in the English alphabet? Despite that, many of the X words on this list are common words we say or use every day, like mix, box, fix, six, and more.
The letter X is such a fun sound to teach! It's a little tricky, though, because it actually makes two different sounds (/k/ /s/), but because it only has one letter, it's not technically a digraph.
This can make it confusing for our young readers to encode and decode properly, so it's important to teach it explicitly and offer plenty of hands-on activities to reinforce this new learning. Otherwise, you may see your students writing box as bocks, etc.
One fun activity you can try is to have your students generate a list of words they know that include this sound and write down the words they come up with. Ask them if they notice anything about the words. They'll usually recognise that X is almost always the final consonant and letter!
They may come up with a few exceptions, like xylophone and xerox, but this an excellent opportunity to notice that when X is at the beginning of a word, it usually takes on a /z/ sound.
Words that End with X for Kindergarten
There aren't very many X words in the English language in general, let alone ones appropriate for our youngest learners! Below, you'll find my favourite list of words that end with X, which I compiled in my free printable decodable word list. It's a helpful resource for kindergarten teachers, especially as it provides examples with all the digraphs, including sh, ch, th, and more.
They're even sorted by the number of phonemes in the word to make it easy to find the perfect words for your sound boxes!
X Word List for Kindergarten
These simple words all have 2 or 3 phonemes, which makes them especially appropriate for kindergarten and preschool students to learn. There are longer words, like suffix and orthodox, but those are more appropriate for older kids.

Lookalike Words
This is a fantastic low-prep activity! Your students need to find the correct word that matches an image from a group of 3 lookalike words. This requires them to decode each word and figure out which has the correct letter sounds. It's great phonemic awareness practice!
Decode & Draw Task Cards
Kids love these task cards because they get to draw what they read! Essentially, they decode three words or phrases that build on each other. The first word will tell them the first image to draw, and the other phrases and sentences will add more details to the picture.
This is a great way to add more open-ended thinking and creativity to your phonics practice!
Missing Sounds
In this activity, your students look at the image and figure out which sound (not letter) is missing from the words. Great for independent practice or small groups! This is a Hive Exclusive resource.
