They come in a variety of different formats, like portrait and landscape, and with or without picture boxes. You can use these blank handwriting worksheets for morning journals, to make a writing journal, for handwriting practice, to publish your writing projects, and more!
Although these were made for kindergarten students, you can use these PDF files for kids of any age. It's more about finding the appropriate paper for their current stage of motor development. They're typically useful for kids from Kindergarten to 2nd grade!
Why do you need blank writing worksheets for kindergarten?
Have you seen an x-ray of a 5-year-old's hand? It's astounding to see how much our students' hands change during their first few school years!
Because of these rapid changes, it's essential to help build your students' fine motor skills. If you offer your writers wide-rule paper like your upper elementary students, writing will be uncomfortable or even painful, and they'll struggle with their letter formation.
These blank handwriting practice sheets will give your kids the space and room to learn how to properly format their upper and lower case letters, so you can actually read and understand their words! This will build their confidence as writers and propel them to write even more.

Free Kindergarten Writing Worksheets
These printable blank handwriting practice sheets will make it easier for your students to write comfortably. I recommend starting with thick lines with dashes, which will make it so much easier for your students to write out large letters while they're developing their fine motor skills and hand strength.
Lined Printable Handwriting Paper - Dotted Middle Line
This basic printable writing paper has large, thick lines perfect for kids developing their pencil grip. With a dashed line in the middle, they can monitor how tall or short their letters are easily.
Over time, they'll be able to use thinner lines, but this is a fantastic starting point.
To make handwriting easier, highlight the top and bottom lines different colours! This can be incredibly helpful for young writers with motor coordination challenges. Their eyes won't have to work so hard to understand where to start and where to end.
Highlight the top line blue and the bottom line green or brown to make sky ground paper, or you can use any consistent colours you like. You could also just highlight the bottom line where each letter must touch.
Lined Printable Handwriting Paper - Dotted Thirds
If you use dotted thirds to teach handwriting, then you'll prefer to use these free handwriting paper templates.
As mentioned above, you might like to highlight the middle third or the bottom line to scaffold students.
Alternatively, you might like to use the pre-filled ground grass sky templates.
In these templates, sky = blue, grass = green and ground = brown. All letters will touch the grass, tall letters will go up into the sky section, and letters with a tail will go down into the ground section.
Kindergarten Writing Paper with Picture Box
Kids love telling stories, so these blank handwriting practice sheets with picture boxes are a natural way to entice them to write! This blank writing paper gives them room to write their own stories and illustrate them, too!
This printable handwriting paper has the same thick dashed lines from above (there are versions for both dotted middle line and dotted thirds), but it also includes a large picture box.
These would also be great to use with recount writing!
Penmanship Paper for Kindergarten
This type of paper is appropriate for students who have already learned to form their letters correctly. They're much more simplified, with a simple line to show where they should draw their letters.
If you offer a page like this too early, your students will not know how to size their letters and either write too big or too small. Save this paper for later in the year when your students are more independent!
